PH Weightlifting President Requests Banning Transgender Athletes

PH Weightlifting President
James Francisco

Appearing before the House Committee on Youth and Sports Development last November 15, 2023, Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella motioned for a bill to exclude transgender athletes in Philippine sporting events.

The former mayor and congressman of Bacolod City classified it as a recurring issue on the international front of weightlifting (together with doping), seeking the assistance of another congressman in implementing the bill.

“I would like to request that another congressman can file a bill not allowing transgender [people] in Philippine sports,” Puentevella mentioned.

A means of alignment with internationally organized tourneys, the chairperson of the House Committee, Faustino Michael Carlos Dy III, adhered to Puentevella’s sentiments, emphasizing “fair competition” and the need to segregate athletes based on their gender conception category. Considering the advantages of males compared to females and vice versa, there is a notable discrepancy from the get-go.

Tokyo 2021 witnessed New Zealand’s Laurel Hubbard, the first openly transgender female Olympic weightlifter, fail to register a lift in the women’s +87 kg category.

Allowing transgender athletes to compete in the opposite category of which they were born poses a polarizing issue, with the globe expressing varied sentiments on the topic.

Puentevella’s petition to prohibit transgender participants aligns with a decision from World Athetics’ (the governing body for track and field and other related running competitions), which came to fruition in early 2023. The technicality bans female participants who underwent male puberty (either beyond Tanner Stage 2 or after age 12) and must abide by a maintained concentration of testosterone.

This decision similarly abides by the structure of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the World Aquatics (FINA), with the latter introducing an “Open” category to tend to such participants.

Definitely.A male is always a male.If he / she enters or compete with a woman , it would be unfair and surely he will dominate the sports.

The commission should create separate categories for trans athletes for various sports. That is the solution for gender inclusive sports.

Request is a mild word DEMAND is the rightful one. We aught to comply with what is right and not be forced to conform to what is wrong. Popularity and public clamor is not always right. Imagine Mike Tyson having sex change and joining the women’s boxing that would be disastrous for the opponents. SO IS WITH any sports involving force and strength.

I’m a duel American and Philippines duel citizen and I’m a serious weight lifter. I totally agree that transgender weight lifters should not be able to compete in transgender weightlifting events. If you have any questions for me you can reach me at [email protected].
