It’s back to the drawing board once again for Gilas Pilipinas.
With the reported departure of four-time Head Coach Chot Reyes, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) looks to regroup in finding a new mentor. Regardless of the changes in the front office, the program’s current naturalized option, Jordan Clarkson, looks to extend his tenure with the Nationals.
Arguably channeling his prime form in the recent 2023 FIBA World Cup, Clarkson spearheaded Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign with the country witnessing first-hand his on-court excellence. Following a commanding victory against basketball powerhouse China during the classification games, the former National Basketball Association (NBA) Sixth-Man-of-the-Year erupted with 34 points to complement his +29 efficiency rating.

Post Gilas Pilipinas’ 96-75 win, Clarkson addressed his possible future with the squad. After nine seasons in the league, the Salt Lake City starter will be 35 years old in the next World Cup, although age won’t seem to be a concern in suiting up for the country again.
“Thirty is the new 20, right? I’m still young. I’m still competing. I don’t think that’s my last performance in this jersey,” Clarkson mentioned. “Hopefully down the line, I’ll be able to put this jersey on and represent the country.”
With the future of Gilas Pilipinas still uncertain, the team’s 2023 FIBA World Cup performance exhibited glimpses of hope through their perseverance, size, and talent-filled pool. Considering Clarkson may lean towards the rear end of his professional career come 2028, donning the national banner would be no surprise, given his ability and experience at the game’s highest level for a final curtain call.
