Filipino Creatives Rep “The Big Bubble” for Air Max Day 2023

Commonwealth PH teams up with Nike SNKRS for Air Max Day 2023

Deemed as one the favorite times of the year for sneakerheads, the highly anticipated Air Max Day 2023 is set to commence this March 26. Since its inception, Nike has consistently turned heads with its exclusive releases, as 2023 continues to live up to expectations.

In line with the newly designed Air Max Pulse set to be unveiled, the Air Max 1 has arguably secured a permanent seat at the coveted Mount Rushmore of sneakers—even more so its original ‘Big Bubble' structure.

To commemorate Air Max Day 2023, Commonwealth Philippines, in partnership with Nike SNKRS, approaches the occasion with a styling twist on the classic silhouette, deviating from the norm of its initial running nature.

The Air Max 1 '86 “Big Bubble,” the first to be retro-ed, features a bigger visible Air unit on the midsole. Consisting of four circles rather than the usual three, the anticipated pair is described to be distinct, specifically on the tail-end of the shoe with a slightly higher rise.

Initially phased out due to quality control issues, it was eventually replaced with its predecessor, the more recognizable Air Max 1, possessing a smaller bubble.

Nike SNKRS Style in Collaboration with Commonwealth Philippines

For its participation in Air Max Day 2023, Commonwealth Philippines, in collaboration with Nike SNKRS Philippines, released a virtual editorial featuring locally recognized creatives in producer and entrepreneur Fern Tan and graphic designer Annika Sy.

Drawing their roots from different industries, the piece sheds light on their styles, integrating minimalist, 90s street, androgynous influences.

Kindred member Tan describes his preferred style as leaning more towards “loose-fitting silhouettes” and monochrome palettes with a hint of color. In his words, “to keep it interesting.”

Perceived through the lens of Ryle Uy and the creative direction of Dom Canlas and the team, the muses are captured wearing neutral-toned pieces, mainly possessing a flowy-like structure, paired with the Big Bubble on foot.

“I enjoy mixing feminine and masculine cuts, especially now that we're moving towards a more fluid fashion space.”, Sy mentions.

This creative take encapsulates the ever-growing fashion culture, coupled with the overall versatility and timelessness of the pair. Whether it's ‘the box, the smell, the stuffin', or the tread,' the Air Max 1's influence continues and will continue to thrive—braving along the changing trends and tides.
