Google has released its annual “Year in Search” that puts the spotlight on the top terms and keywords across the globe and for particular countries. For the Philippines, “SIM Registration” led the way in 2023 for the news category, coinciding with the implementation of the SIM Registration Law, which requires users to register their phone numbers for national security purposes. Many looked up the process and the deadlines imposed by the telecommunication companies.
Another finding confirms that the PH is still a Laker country, with “Lakers vs Warriors” and “Lakers vs Nuggets” at the top of sports terms, along with the recently-concluded FIBA World Cup held in Manila.
“Ere” is the highest-ranked local track among music, only behind James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go.” The hit track from Juan Karlos had a monster year in streams, which includes being the first Filipino single to enter Spotify’s Global 100. The song was also covered by Danish band Lukas Graham alongside JK during their visit to Manila.
Google also had a “Farewell” category for notable names who passed this 2023, with veteran news anchor Mike Enriquez topping the list. Actors Joey Paras, Andrei Sison, Patrick Guzman, and ‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry rounded out the top five.
According to Google’s Head of Communication and Public Affairs Mervin Wenke, the massive interest in K-Drama is unique to the Philippines. Korean actor Ahn Bo-hyun ranked first in male personalities due to his relationship with BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, and British model Katy Louise Sanders topped the female rankings for her marriage to Song Joong-ki.
“That’s not present in other countries in Southeast Asia and it really speaks volumes about Filipinos’ love for Halyu or the Korean wave,” Wenke said.
