As the dystopian drama-thriller series “The Last of Us” eyes a possible second season airing in 2025, the award-winning video game franchise on which the show is based may also receive a third installment. Game co-creator Neil Druckmann hinted at a follow-up to the 2020-released “The Last of Us Part 2” title, disclosing the news during the final segments of the Grounded 2: Making of The Last of Us Part 2 documentary.
Nearly four years since the release of its latest rendition on next-generation consoles, Druckmann notes that its sequel has already been in the works, featuring Joel’s brother, Tommy, as the protagonist of a “small story.”
“I mentioned we have written a story that takes place after the Last of Us Part 2 that stars Tommy. I hope one day we get to make it,” Naughty Dog’s Head of Creative mentions.
“The headlines across the industry were like, “Naughty Dog has outlined The Last of Us Part 3,” and that’s actually wrong. It was always a small story, it was never a full title,” he added.
As the plans for “The Last of Us Part 3” are still up in the air, Druckmann perceived its predecessor as an ideal conclusion to the franchise, though the possibility of another chapter isl very much open if given the chance.
“At the time, we had higher priorities at Naughty Dog…Just based on where we were, I didn’t wanna prioritize this story, so that story was shelved. I still believe one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know if it’ll be a game or a show…TBD.”
“The Last of Us Part 2” won more than 320 Game of the Year Awards when it was released in 2020. The live-action adaptation will mirror its plot in the upcoming second season. The nine-episode series stars Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) and won eight Primetime Emmy Awards and received Golden Globe nominations.
