Stars shined the brightest for Philippine cinema as the 71st Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) welcomed a familiar icon, with Nadine Lustre as its Best Actress.
Praising the Filipina actress-singer, the Academy awarded her for a convincing female-lead performance as Kichi in the thriller picture “Greed” at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel last August 13, 2023. The Nadine Lustre-Diego Loyzaga starred film tackles the narrative of a couple’s unlikely fortune as the winners of the biggest jackpot in the lottery, encountering difficulties when departing from their sleepy town.
Lustre’s display garnered FAMAS’ highest recognition for a female actress for the second time in the past five years. Formally introduced as a nominee for her portrayal in the Yam Laranas-directed film, she also starred in the 2023 Best Picture candidate, “Deleter,” as she claimed the sole award for both productions. Debuting as the Academy’s Best Actress Awardee last 2019 for “Never Not Love You,” the feat captures her artistic growth across genres.
Apart from Lustre’s second FAMAS Best Actress Award, Nuel Naval’s “Family Matters” triumphed, recognized as 2023’s Best Picture, Best Actor (Noel Trinidad), Best Supporting Actress (Nikki Valdez), and Best Edited Film.
Other awardees include “Reroute,” claiming the Best Supporting Actor (Sid Lucero) and Best Sound titles, with “Blue Room” capturing the Best Director (Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan) and Best Cinematography (Niel Daza).
“La Traidora” received Best Screenplay, as ANIMA’s Leonor Will Never Die rounded up the winners, having the Best Production Design.
