After sweeping awards at Metro Manila Film Festival for his horror film “Deleter,” Mikhail Red will once again deal with the supernatural. Per Variety, the director is set to helm the live-action TV series adaptation of “Dreamwalker,” a fantasy graphic novel by Filipino-American writer Mikey Sutton and artist Noel Layon Flores.
According to the synopsis, “Dreamwalker” follows the story of Kat, a Filipino-American vlogger who finds herself with the ability to enter other people’s dreams and wield weapons against the creatures of Filipino folklore. Season one will follow Kat’s origin story and her return to the Philippines “under mysterious circumstances.”
Apart from Red, “Respeto” director Treb Montreras II will serve as showrunner and Los Angeles-based creative Kaitlyn Fae Fajilan as head writer. GMA’s Kate Valdez, who has appeared in shows like “Unica Hija” and “Encantadia”, will portray the series lead.
Per Sutton, Valdez served as the inspiration for the comic since the beginning.”I randomly discovered Kate Valdez in 2018 while recovering from a near-fatal stroke. I saw her on the GMA drama ‘Onanay’ and her emotionally rich performance and timeless beauty made me declare her the Next Big Thing. I modeled and named ‘Dreamwalker’ after her,” said Sutton.
Valdez acknowledged the novel’s nod back in 2022, calling it “surreal.”
The show will be produced by London and Singapore-based media company 108 Media and is projected to carry multiple seasons. The series is expected to debut across regions in Asia in 2024.
“The goal is to create an original mind-blowing and visually dynamic series that dives deep into the horrors in our dreams vs. the horrors of our world,” said Montreras. We will utilize different mediums and techniques to create breath-taking designs that capture Philippine folklore’s intricate universe.”
