The mecca of theatrical artistry welcomes a brand new face (one that is proudly 100% Filipino).
New York City’s Broadway Theatre houses the David Byrne and Fatboy Slim brainchild, “Here Lies Love” (HLL), a disco pop musical tackling the rise and fall of the Marcos Administration centered on Filipina First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.
The biographical production inherits a party-centric atmosphere—tending to the former First Lady’s appeal to nightlife. Reportedly installing a disco ball in her New York townhouse, the David Korins (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen) designed set integrates similar themes with a completely interactive 90-minute, no-intermission atmosphere mimicking the likes of a nightclub.

Broadway’s newest resident opened its doors last July 20, 2023, with its debut featuring a fully immersive Filipino environment. Its Thursday premiere featured a “colorful jeepney parked at the facade, as the golden rays of the Philippine flag shined ever so brightly on 1681 Broadway—welcoming both Hollywood and Filipino personalities to its red carpet.
Among those who joined the fledging Filipino cast and crew were “director Alex Timbers, creator David Byrne, HLL producers H.E.R. and Jo Koy, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee with his children Jackson and Satchel, Korean actor-director Daniel Dae Kim, Fil-Am actress Tia Carrere, fashion designer Josie Cruz Natori, drag queen and reality TV star Manila Luzon, and Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang draped in a Barong Tagalog.”
