President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. recognized Apo Whang Od’s contributions to the Philippine traditional arts, awarding her with the Outstanding Government Workers of 2023 and the Presidential Medal of Merit awards at the Malacañang Palace last Wednesday, February 14. 2024.
The 106-year-old Kalinga tattoo artist is regarded as the last living mambabatok—utilizing thorn and bamboo sticks to create tribal designs.
”We are honoring Apo Whang Od for works that have made her and the country famous for other achievements that make her Filipino worthy of our respect and of our admiration. She’s a pioneer in shattering gender stereotypes, venturing into tattooing when it was just a man’s exclusive preserve,” the 17th President of the Philippines mentioned.
“As Apo Whang-Od’s works appeal to diverse cultures and across political divides, she becomes an enabler for unity and an example of an idea that binds us all. She is truly a national treasure,” he added.
The Civil Service Commission’s (CSC) Honor Awards Program (HAP) commends deserving public service individuals who’ve exemplified outstanding work performance and ethicality, noting recipients of the Dangal ng Bayan, Presidential Lingkod Bayan, and CSC (Civil Service Commission) Pag-asa awards.
