Filipino-Norwegian artist HILLARI receives regional recognition, capturing two nominations ahead of 2024’s Spellemannprisen (often referred to as the Norwegian Grammy Awards in English). The 19-year-old multi-instrumentalist managed a finalist spot for its “This Year’s R&B/Soul” and “Best New Artist” following her 2023 debut.
The award from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) recognizes Norwegian musicians for their contributions to the local music scene and those whose roots have flourished overseas. HILLARI’s EP “How Is Your Soul?” garnered the academy's attention for its prestigious R&B/Soul category.
She took her reaction to the news to social media, showcasing her excitement and disbelief at being considered for the award.
“You guys are the reason why this is very much possible, and I appreciate each one of you all being here in my special journey. Most importantly, YAH BLESS,” she wrote.
“Thank you to Spellemannprisen for nominating a 19-year-old kid from little Oslo for two categories. Words can’t explain how thankful and humbled I am,” she added.
In her pioneering year, she released “Brenner,” a track completely sung in Norwegian, followed by an extensive list of titles and collaborations with Norwegian and Filipino artists. She briefly visited her hometown of Bacolod, Negros Occidental, last November 2023, scheduled gigs around the Metro, and worked with Denise Julia and Jolianne. In an interview with Complex Philippines, she mentions a possible return to the Philippines, further reconnecting and breaking ground in her hometown.
