Sneak Peek: Commonwealth PH’s Entry at the adidas Consortium Cup

Macky Arquilla

Adidas announced the Consortium Cup last February 15, a sneaker design tournament where 16 iconic sneaker stores are tasked to design an adidas model of their choice, ranging from the Gazelle, Samba, to Superstar.

The first-of-its-kind tournament sees the likes of BAIT, Extra Butter, and Nice Kicks go head-to-head in a four-round knockout competition format for four straight weeks. Determined by fan voting, each winner per round will have their concepts released in stores for limited quantities. Per Hypebeast, 15 sneakers will be released from the event.

Also participating in this tournament is the Philippines’ very own Commonwealth Philippines, which will go head-to-head with BSTN, a streetwear shop from Germany.

For the first round of the adidas Consortium Cup, Commonwealth PH chose to style the adidas Samba. The design is inspired by the Jamaican mesh shirt often sported by purveyors of the Commonwealth brand in Manila and Los Angeles.

Commonwealth PH also opted to use full-grain tumbled leather on the vamp, eyestay, and heel panel, combined with a highly-breathable jersey material on both the medial and lateral part of the sneaker. The sneaker also includes a leather shoe lining and Commonwealth and adidas markings on the tongue and insole.
