The Complex Council best represents what Complex Philippines stands for—the culmination of youth culture in the Philippines. Whether in music, fashion, or sports, the Council commands respect, influences many, and lets their work speak for itself.

Claim to fame: Rap prodigy, putting respecc in women’s rap game.

As followers of the local rap scene, witnessing the growth of Alex Thursten Bruce is nothing short of amazing. The 15-year-old MC became a must-watch at the age of 10 when she was dropping bars for local festivals and high-profile events like the PBA and Fete de la Musique.

She can effortlessly switch verses from Tagalog to English and rhyme about being badass in Dime Girls one moment and the trappings of adolescence in Ayoko Pa the next. Bruce has also collaborated with Fil-Canadian songwriter August Rigo and expanded her range with intimate tracks like Yakap with SB19’s Justin.

Alex Bruce is a force in a male-dominated scene, proving that stereotypes are a thing of the past.

What’s been the biggest shock to you in terms of how music has grown in the Philippines?

Probably the new artists.

Why do you think Filipinos have such an interest in music?

Because it runs in our blood.

“Kung ano yung maganda, that’s our music..”

How does music help the Filipino identity?

In my opinion, it reflects our cultural diversity. Filipinos don’t listen to hip-hop lang. We love exploring other genres. Kung ano yung maganda, that’s our music.

Fill in the blank for us: Youth culture in the Philippines is defined by _____ and kept alive by _____.
